UPDATE: The Infoshop is closing temporarily, re-opening when we are able to find a more permanent and affordable location!

If you know of a location, or a person who has space to offer and is sympathetic to the cause of community building and social justice, or if you'd just like to help with volunteering or by donating funds, please send us your information at sbinfoshop@gmail.com!

The projects at the infoshop will continue in a variety of ways:

-books will be temporarily housed in the Biko Co-op in Isla Vista!

-Food Not Bombs will continue out of a new location on the Mesa! Come to the serving to find out more.

-Workshops and meetings will have to be held in houses or parks, but we are also contacting local groups who may be sympathetic.

-We're excited to announce that the Isla Vista Food Co-Op will be hosting a portion of our Zine Library!

-A new group has been formed with the goal of acquiring a community space for all-ages, drug-free shows and events, and with the potential of carrying on infoshop projects! This group meets Sundays in the Biko Garage at 6:00 PM.

The Infoshop has been an inspiration for projects and people around the country, and we're confident it won't be long before more spaces like it sprout back up. You can even start your own!

What is an Infoshop?

The Santa Barbara Infoshop is a local part of a worldwide movement to provide space and resources for ideas and activities that are difficult to find in chain bookstores and for-profit spaces.

An infoshop is a volunteer-run reading room, library and community center that offers information on issues such as politics, race and anti-racism, the environment, feminism, anti-authoritarian ideas and movements, alternative economics, gay and lesbian studies, social theory, history, fiction, non-fiction, and creative non-fiction.

Infoshops also typically serve to support local movements for social justice, environmental protection, peace, democracy, and political and economic liberation.

How the Infoshop is Run

The Santa Barbara Infoshop is run by the Santa Barbara Infoshop Collective, which consists of locals and transplants from varying ages and backgrounds, who all share a desire to build community and support democratic social movements. We pool our resources and time in order to create and support this space that we feel our community is in need of.

The SB Infoshop Collective has meetings at the Infoshop (421 Alisos) every Thursday at 6 PM. The meeting is open to those who would like to contribute resources or volunteer, and would like to be a part of this project. Decisions are made through group consensus, and without group officers.

Events Around Santa Barbara

Lots of wonderful, radical things happen in Santa Barbara all the time, including, but not limited to:

Food Not Bombs
Food Not Bombs is a worldwide, grassroots, anti-authoritarian movement with the goal of collecting donated food that would otherwise be wasted, and serving that food for FREE to anyone who would like some.  The name comes from the simple notion that the resources of society should go towards providing for people rather than manufacturing weapons.

Food Not Bombs serves food in Santa Barbara at the following times and locations:

Monday, 1 PM, at the Santa Barbara Public Library

Saturday, 4 PM, at the Santa Barbara Public Library

Sunday, 5 PM, at Acorn Park in Isla Vista

Really Really Free Market
The Really Really Free Market is a community event that puts the Gift Economy into practice:  Goods and services that are in excess are given away freely rather than for barter or cost.

The Really Really Free Market does not currently happen on a regular basis, but anyone can set one up:  Simply publicize a flyer, with a date and location and information about the event.  Distribute this widely.  Also, advertise anywhere else you can think of:  Local papers, craigslist, community radio such as KCSB... the possibilities are endless.  Make sure the event includes food, music, and anything else you can think of, and that you have a means of cleaning up any extra stuff at the end of the day.  Set one up next week!  'Free Markets should proliferate far and wide...

Critical Mass
Every last Friday of the month, 6pm, meet other riders at the Gazebo in Alameda Park.  The ride begins when it seems like the group is as big as it will get, and then takes the streets through Santa Barbara.

The SBInfoshop.org Drupal Site

This is a Drupal site for SBInfoshop.org. Infoshop.org itself uses Drupal. The site maintainers are working on converting all older static HTML over to Drupal.

What is Drupal you may ask? Drupal is a content management system. In other words, a system for managing a site's content in an easy-to-use way that many people can collaborate on without needing web development skills. With the Drupal CMS, anyone of us can add and edit content like pages, news stories and events at any time from any computer in the world without having to hassle a web geek. Drupal can do a lot more than just that too. Think of everyone being able to work on the web site as the tip of the empowerment iceberg.

Incidentally, I searched for "drupal infoshop theme" on Google and result #3, #5 and #6 were to EmpowerThyself.com!

Once this site is fully operational and gets consensus approval, we can switch sbinfoshop.org over to point here.
